Types of Georgia Disability Permits
If you are a Georgia resident with a disability, you may qualify for a disabled placard or license plate that allows you to park in designated disabled spaces.

You may be eligible for one of the following permits depending upon the nature and duration of your disability:
- Temporary disability placard.
- Permanent disability placard or special permanent placard.
- Disability license plate.
- Disabled veteran license plate.
Disability placards are also available to institutions for vehicles that regularly provide transportation to people with disabilities.
Traveling with a Disability Placard or Plate
If you are traveling to Georgia from another state, you DO NOT need a GA placard or license plate for handicapped parking if you have one from your home state.

Parking Placards
The following placards are available from the GA DOR:
- Temporary parking permit is free.
- Permanent parking permit is free.
- Special permanent parking permit is free.
- These are for specially modified vehicles or disabilities involving the inability to use both arms.
To apply for any disability placard in Georgia, you will need a Disabled Person's Parking Affidavit (Form MV-9D), that includes medical certification by one of the following professionals:
- A licensed physician.
- An osteopath, podiatrist, or chiropractor.
- An optometrist.
Submit your application in person at your county tag office, or contact them to ask about applying by mail.
NOTE: Institutions can also use the Disabled Person's Parking Affidavit (Form MV-9D) to apply for a disability placard.
Disability License Plates
You can apply for a disability license plate if:
- You or your dependent has a permanent disability.
AND - You have a vehicle registered in your name.
NOTE: When you apply for a disability license plate, you are also applying for a permanent placard.
To apply for a disabled person's license plate, you must submit:
- The Disabled Person's Parking Affidavit (Form MV-9D), including medical certification by an approved healthcare professional.
- A vehicle registration document:
- The Motor Vehicle Title/Tag Application (Form MV-1).
OR - Your registration renewal notice.
- The Motor Vehicle Title/Tag Application (Form MV-1).
- Payment for fees:
- $20 plate fee.
- Vehicle taxes, which vary by vehicle type.
Submit your license plate application to your Georgia county tag officein person, or call to check if they accept applications by mail.
Disabled Veteran License Plates

- 100% disability status.
- Loss of hands or feet.
- Vision loss.
To apply for a disabled veteran plate, you will need:
- The Request for Manufacture of a Special Veteran License Plate (Form MV-9W).
- Proof of disability:
- A VA entitlement letter for VA certified disabilities.
OR - A certified statement from your doctor confirming your disability.
- A VA entitlement letter for VA certified disabilities.
- Proof of military service:
- Discharge papers.
OR - Documentation of current service.
- Discharge papers.
Disabled veteran license plates are issued for free. You may still be responsible for vehicle taxes.
You can submit your application in person at your Georgia county tax office.
Renew a GA Handicap Permit
All disability parking placards and license plates in Georgia expire, even permits for permanent disabilities.
Temporary parking placards are valid for up to 180 days, depending on your medical professional's certification. You must apply for a new temporary placard if you need it longer.
Permanent disability placards and special equipment placards are valid for 4 years or longer and must be renewed. Contact your county tag office for renewal requirements.
Georgia disabled license plates and disabled veteran license plates are renewed by renewing your vehicle registration. Since you'll have a permanent placard with your license plate, you must also renew your disability placard.
