Here’s how to create serial port monitor connection and use this program for sniffing serial interfaces:

  1. Download Serial Port Monitor and install it on your computer.
  2. Launch the app and start a monitoring session.
    To do this, head to the Main menu > Session > New session. Alternatively, you can click the ‘New’ on the main toolbar or use the ‘Ctrl + N’ keyboard shortcut.
  3. Now, in the “New monitoring session” window, choose the view modes which will be used to display the captured data.
    Select the desired modes or use the 'Select all ’ or 'Select none’ buttons to simplify your selection.
  4. Then, decide on whether to start the monitoring session immediately or start it in a new window.
  5. You can also specify what events you are interested in with the ‘Capture options’ – Create/Close, Read/Write, Device Control.
  6. Finally, click the ‘Start monitoring’ button to start your session.

In order to save a monitoring session, choose ‘Session > Save session/ Save session As’ in the Main menu. Or click ‘Save’ on the main toolbar or use the ‘Ctrl + S’ keyboard shortcut.

Has anyone been successful in using PuTTY to talk to a serial port on Windows 10?

Whenever I try, it just beeps at me. I'm using 8/N/1. I tried all the flow control options and various baud rates.

The Arduino IDE will talk to my devices, so it's not drivers or the device I have connected and I know I'm using the correct COM port and baud rate.

Ok, I figured it out. I was clicking Serial in the left hand panel. Apparently, that was not for opening a connection to a serial port, but for setting up the default options for serial connections.

There is an 'Open' button on that screen, but if you click on that it just beeps at you.

Apparently what I should have been doing was clicking the Serial radio button under Connection Type: on the Session screen.
